We have tiles throughout our existing home. Can they be removed and the old concrete beneath polished?
The existing concrete underneath your tiles can usually be polished, and in most cases, it will come out very nicely. Actually, some old concrete looks like brand new concrete when it is polished properly. However, this is not always the case, and please be aware that some old concrete may be extremely rustic in appearance and might have screed bar lines and other visible imperfections. Another aspect to be mindful of is that sometimes there will be a ‘grid pattern’ where the grout lines were. This could be from either staining or bleaching of the concrete that has occurred over the years, or it could be that there has been dehydration or moisture entrapment underneath the tiles. It is not always easy to predict what the result will be. If you choose to have a mechanical polish, sometimes this pattern will ‘breathe out’ and fade somewhat over a period of time. However, if the grid pattern is visible upon grinding and you have chosen a grind and seal with topical coating, the topical coating is not breathable, so you will likely have to anticipate that the grid pattern will stay. Many people don’t mind the grid pattern and it only occurs in a small percentage of cases, but it’s still good to be aware that this is something that can occur. Although it is not always easy to anticipate what the results will be, polishing the concrete under your tiles can turn out very well, especially if you don’t mind the possibility of a few imperfections or a faint grid pattern.
